The Rise of AI in Education

As artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT become more common in college classrooms, students and teachers are debating whether these technologies help students learn or actually take away from their critical thinking skills. 

“AI is popping up everywhere in classrooms now, and it’s really helpful for things like brainstorming or getting quick feedback on our work,” Seanna Miller, a student at FAMU said. 

Is AI A Threat to Critical Thinking? 

A lot of students really like using AI because it makes homework and studying easier, allowing them to quickly find answers or get help with writing. This convenience saves time and lets them focus on other activities they enjoy. However, many teachers are concerned that relying too much on AI could be harmful. They worry that it might make students less likely to think critically or solve problems on their own, which are essential skills for learning. There’s also the risk of cheating, as some students might use AI to get answers without actually doing the work, leading to gaps in their knowledge. Additionally, the information provided by AI isn’t always accurate, and students may end up believing incorrect facts. So, while AI can be a helpful tool, it’s crucial for students to balance its use with traditional studying methods to ensure they truly learn and develop their skills. 

“AI has its positive impacts, whether that’s helping students create study guides with them using their notes, supporting them in understanding the complexities of a specific topic,” Imani Evorra said, an Academic coach at FAMU. “It tends to turn negative when they’re using it to write their essays and to get out of their homework.” 

The Potential for Dependency on AI

One of the major concerns about using AI in education is that it might lead to laziness. If students rely too heavily on AI to do their thinking, they may not develop essential skills like problem-solving and analysis. 

“When using AI tools it’s not challenging students enough, to the point where they are becoming way too dependent on the actual AI to do everything for them,” said Evora. 

The debate around AI tools is ongoing, and many colleges are trying to find ways to integrate technology while still promoting critical thinking. Some educators are exploring how to teach students to use AI responsibly and effectively, emphasizing the importance of combining AI tools with traditional learning.  

The Future of AI in Education 

 As more students use AI tools, it’s clear that these technologies are reshaping education. While they offer valuable assistance, it’s important for students and educators to ensure that learning remains a priority. Finding a balance between embracing new technology and developing critical thinking skills will be essential for success in today’s academic environment. 

 “AI can be a great tool for school, but we can’t lose sight of the fact that true success comes from thinking for ourselves and using our own judgment,” Kamaya Payne said, another student at FAMU.  

The rise of AI in education brings both benefits and challenges. As the conversation continues, it’s crucial to consider how we can use technology to enhance learning without compromising our ability to think critically.
