TEDxFAMU: Beyond Great Heights

After a revitalizing winter break, Florida A&M University students are ready to spring into a new semester! The anticipation for TEDxFAMU is filling the Hill amidst announcing the event’s speakers. The wait has ended, as the event will take place on January 22 at 3 p.m. In more news, ticket sales have officially begun!

Students like Trinitee Hassan, who serves as Miss SISTUHs for the 2022-203 academic year, have seen the recent posts about the event and believe this is an excellent opportunity for her peers to receive public speaking experience.

“I think it’s nice for people who do things like Broadcast Journalism students to show their talents and what they really have,” Hassan says.

The planning committee, composed of an entirely student-run group, has worked diligently over the past several months to create an event that will set a standard worth Bragging rights. The idea for TEDxFAMU sparked as the event organizer Nyla Sams has received a lot of remarks over the past few years about her very own TEDx speech at an event she attended during her senior year of high school.

“To this day, I have people who will talk about my TED Talk and how they showed it to their class of Kindergarteners, or they sent it to their teenage daughter, or how they experienced it themselves,” Sams says.

Sams frequently receives questions about “how?” How did she get the opportunity to take part in such an impactful experience? But Sams wants others, especially students at Florida A&M University, to see her speech and know that they can do the same thing. As she recounts, the only difference between her and other prospective speakers is that she was presented with the opportunity. She made it her mission to create a similar opportunity for students in her new environment.

TEDxFAMU will entail eight speeches exploring the idea of “Beyond Great Heights” and what that means to the university and speakers alike.

Students, faculty, and alumni are invited to participate in what is envisioned as the first of many more TEDx events. TEDxFAMU for 2023 will set a precedent for events that will highlight the academia of FAMU aside from the controversy that sometimes overshadows the educational and academic successes that occur on campus.
