FAMU Students Attend New York Fashion Week

Florida A&M University’s School of Journalism and Graphic Communication (SJGC) sent three of its students to New York Fashion Week (NYFW) in New York City.
Dean Ann Wead Kimbrough chose three journalism students, Steven Bryd-Pitts, Alexis Lockheart and James Rozier to represent FAMU in New York City where they had the chance to attend runway shows by top designers such as Kanye West, Tom Ford, and Tommy Hilfiger. The students were encouraged by Dean Kimbrough to use this opportunity as a networking tool and expose their personal brand while representing the university and its re
spective academic programs.
“When students express their desires to expand their learning opportunities in areas that compliment SJGC course offerings, we find specialized avenues to assist them achieve such goals through,” Dean Kimbrough said.
Alexis Lockheart, a senior public relations student from West Palm Beach, FL, was overwhelmed with joy just hours before boarding her plane at the Tallahassee International Airport.
“This is the experience of a lifetime!” Lockheart said. “When you’ve worked so hard and you finally start to see the fruits of your labor, it gives you so much energy and ambition to keep moving forward.”

ue shadowing opportunities, interviews and behind-the-scenes tours with celebrities for Lockheart and Byrd-Pitts. Rozier secured a highly sought after assignment as an assistant to the fashion industry’s top multimedia outlet, WWD.
“I was able to go to shows, experience behind the scenes and see the framework of what it takes to put a full fashion show together. Attending shows with designers [DKNY, Tommy Hilfiger, and Gucci] … and watching them reinvent their brands the experience was breath taking and I am truly grateful to have experienced this journey,” Rozier said.
As a result of their mini internships in New York, the students appeared in and produced several pieces of visual and written materials that captured their experiences in New York.
New York Fashion Week showcased Fall and Winter fashions, where roughly 125,000 people from around the world flocked to the city for their passion for fashion.
