FAMU Homecoming Housing Step Show: A Night of Talent and Tradition

On October 28 at 7 PM, the Florida A&M University Homecoming Housing Step Show took place, drawing an enthusiastic crowd to the Will Packer Amphitheater. Hosted by Justice L. Johnson and Miles Howard, with music provided by DJLoosekid, the venue buzzed with students, alumni, and community members, all eager to celebrate this beloved annual tradition.

Competing Teams

This year, four teams competed for the coveted title:

  • IMPACT (representing Palmetto and Phase)
  • VGS (representing Polkinghorne Village Girls)
  • TNT (for FAMU North and South Towers)
  • INSYNC (for Sampson and Young Hall)

Theme: “Remember the Times”

This year’s homecoming theme, “Remember the Times,” served as a vibrant homage to the cultural landmarks of the 1970s. The participating teams creatively incorporated elements from this iconic decade into their performances, paying tribute to notable cultural phenomena such as the influential Black Mafia, the nostalgic spirit of “Roll Bounce,” the beloved animated series “Fat Albert,” and the legendary “Soul Train,” the iconic dance and music television show that captivated audiences during the 1970s.

Each performance showcased the unique talents of the participants while evoking a profound sense of nostalgia and appreciation for the rich cultural tapestry of the 1970s. The showcase also featured special appearances from The Sensai (the step masters of each dorm), Thee Melodic Stepping Experience (MSE), the Distinguished Young Gentlemen (DYG), House Arrest, and the Rampage Step Team.

Audience Reaction

Rylie Franklin, a second-year Pharmacy Scholar from Los Angeles, expressed her enthusiasm.

“I loved seeing people I know from last year and this year do so well on stage. I hope it continues to get better and better each year,” Franklin said.

Results

After an impressive display of precision and athleticism, the results of the Homecoming Housing Step Show were announced:

  • Third Place: TNT
  • Second Place: IMPACT
  • First Place: INSYNC (for the third consecutive year)

Insights from INSYNC

Zarryen Gaines, the assistant coach for INSYNC 2024, spoke about the team’s impressive consistency.

“The standard is in the name INSYNC. We always ask if our members are good or great,” Gaines said. “We push everyone to exceed limits, teaching techniques that extend beyond stepping and into life. Our standard is to be great.”

Leading up to the competition, INSYNC focused on refining their routines.

“We concentrated on cleaning, making the performance tighter and more polished. We aimed for greatness, not just goodness,” Gaines said.

A Moment of Triumph

After catching sight of Jah-Nia Forde, a first-year student who joined INSYNC this year, an overwhelming wave of emotion washed over her.

With tears brimming in her eyes, she expressed her heart felt joy.

“I want to cry so badly, I want to cry so badly. We did it!”

In that moment, she reflected the hard work and dedication that had led her to this achievement, embodying the spirit of resilience that fuels the team. Her heartfelt response resonated deeply, reminding everyone present of the strength found in community and the transformative power of collective effort.

With a dedicated approach to excellence and a clear vision for the future, INSYNC continues to inspire both its members and the audience, reinforcing the legacy of FAMU’s stepping tradition. The housing step show remains a cherished event, fostering a sense of community and showcasing the vibrant talent of FAMU’s students and alumni.
