The student body of Florida A&M University and surrounding community is in mourning after the unexpected loss of two of its students.

Friends, family, students and faculty gathered around the Eternal Flame for a candlelight vigil Thursday evening in remembrance of Alfred Motlow III and Aniya Brown who passed away early Saturday morning from a car accident in Shelby County, Tennessee.

Friends and family of the two rattlers came together to comfort each other and reflected on the memories they shared with Motlow and Brown.

Alfred Motlow was a member of Big Brother Little Brother Mentoring Program and the Mighty Melodic Bloody UP Upsilon Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.  In honor of him, the two organizations performed some of his favorite songs and steps on the quad as a final farewell to their brother. Motlow was also a member of the FAMU-FSU Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.

Aniya Brown was a member of the FAMU-FSU Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers and was planning on starting up her own organization called Coffrey Mentoring.

The service was led by the Rakeem Ford, Senate President and member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

Dr. Larry Robinson, 12th president of Florida A&M University (FAMU)said, “I believe that it is time where God sends special people like them just so we can see and witness an example of the type of people we can all be.”

“To hear that he passed so soon. One thing that gives me relief is that he’s now with his father, the Omega Chapter. I’m just glad that he made it. That tells me that God made sure that he at least became a member of Omega before seeing his father again,” said Kameron Lewis, current Vice Basileus of the Upsilon Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

“She had a keen sense of purpose and a level of responsibility that separated her from her peers,” Abdul Brimah,” said of Aniya. “I think that everyone should keep in memory her smile that could light up a room and energy that we should carry from her through our everyday life. Using that as motivation and drive to do better and share her smile,” said Brimah.

Alfred Motlow, 19, and his girlfriend, Aniya Brown, 20, were killed while traveling back to Tallahassee following winter break. The crash happened early saturday morning in Shelby County, Tennessee. Authorities say a speeding car crashed into the car Motlow and Brown were in.

There were three people in the initial car – a woman and two adolescents, who suffered severe burns.
