The Video Music Awards is a night all about the hottest music, but it is also one about fashion. Every year, celebs bring their best looks to the stage and the red carpet, and this year’s VMA fashion was nothing short of amazing. Here are a few of the best looks from the 40th annual VMAs.

Megan Thee Stallion wore a number of stunning looks during the VMAs. She hosted the annual award show and expressed her excitement about hosting and showcasing her outfits during the event.

“I’m excited to change clothes 500 times … I’m excited for people to see what I bring to the table while hosting,” Megan said in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.

Her first look of the night was a strapless gown by Nicole + Felicia, which featured a strapless bodice, mesh skirt and a flared velvet bottom skirt that appeared to tie at her legs. She tied off the look with rings, bracelets from Lorraine Schwartz and a gorgeous black bob to compliment the dress.

In Megan’s second look of the night, she wore a bodysuit inspired by the 2024 Olympics women’s gymnastics team. Her one-shoulder bodysuit was adorned with rhinestones shaped like the American flag, with the word “VMA” spelled across her bust. The look was topped off with sheer fishnet nights and plain white pumps.

Megan’s third look of the night was a gorgeous red floor-length gown. The dress was made out of a double-breasted trench coat and bustier, with the coat collar sticking out of her waist, giving the dress a more unique look. The train of the dress was decorated with black crystals.

Megan The Stallion’s fourth look paid homage to Britney Spears’s iconic look during her performance of “Slave 4 U” at the 2001 VMAs. The rapper even had her own boa constrictor finish off the look. Megan was one of a few artists inspired by Britney Spears at the VMAs.

Tate McRae also wore a look inspired by Britney Spears. She paid tribute to Spears by wearing a beautiful Roberto Cavalli lace minidress with black Fleur de Mal lingerie underneath that resembled Spears’ iconic Dolce and Gabbana look at the 2001 VMAs.

Sabrina Carpenter was a vintage beauty in her Bob Mackie dress at the VMAs. The dress sparkled with sequins, all from top to bottom, and had clear crystals as embellishments on the sweetheart neckline. The dress was the same one Madonna wore to the 1991 Academy Awards. After their collaboration at Vanity Fair, the dress was custom-made for the pop singer.

Chappell Roan also wore some iconic looks at the 2024 VMAs. She started the night strutting the red carpet in a sheer white and red gown from Y/Project’s fall 2024 collection. The star of the show was the green medieval robe that accompanied the dress. Roan also brought along a carpet and said both pieces were 300 and 600 years old in an interview at the VMAs. Her look was accessorized with tin boots, a cross necklace, dagger nails and a medieval sword.

“Don’t lose it!” An interview tells her after hearing how old the items were. “Girl, I won’t cause it’s rented!” Roan laughs in response. “That is the most expensive thing I would ever own.”

Roan kept the Joan of Arc vibes going during the award show with her outfit during her “Good Luck Babe!” performance. She wore a full suit of armor made out of metal and chainmail. The look was finished off with a metal headband and side fishtail braid.

Roan’s third look was a maxi dress made entirely from chainmail from Julien Dossena’s spring 2024 collection. The look featured a matching headpiece, gloves, and a purse with a dagger dangling from it. This look was the final piece of Roan’s Joan of Arc trilogy.

Glorilla channeled a few female music artists in her VMA looks. Her red-carpet look was inspired by TLC’s Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and created by custom by Bent Kahina. The rapper wore a reflective outfit with a cropped jacket, oversized pants, and a mini tube top around her chest. Her braids recreated Lopes’ hairstyles, which was the cherry on top of an iconic look.

Glorilla’s stage outfit was a bedazzled pinstripe two-piece ensemble decorated with rhinestones. The look was accessories with a matching bedazzled hat, tie, and socks. The look shined bright on stage and recalled Janet Jackson’s suit that she wore in her 1990 “Alright” music video.

“I’m a fan of a lot of great female artists that came before me, so I wanted to pay a tribute to them.” Glorilla shared in an interview with Vogue. “I’m truly blessed!”
