The Hip-Hop community is still rocked by the sudden death of Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan back in September, going almost a month without an official cause of death.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to USA Today on Wednesday that the 34-year-old, born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, officially died on September 5 of an accidental drug overdose. According to an autopsy report, numerous drugs including fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine, promethazine and THC were found in Quan’s system. No signs of trauma were shown upon examination and his death was ruled an accident.
Quan was reportedly found lying on the floor of his Atlanta home with food in his mouth by his brother, who then picked him up and placed him on the couch. A woman known to be his girlfriend, Amber Williams, later called the police once she noticed Quan’s body was cold and he was no longer breathing.
Rich Homie Quan garnered success in the early 2010’s with hits like “Type of Way”, “Walk Through” and “Flex” through his mixtapes and single releases. He began his career in hip-hop after a 15-month incarceration for burglary. In a 2014 interview with XXL Magazine, he shared that once he came home, he began writing poetry and eventually wanted to put his creative writing to a beat.

“I never saw myself going this far with music. Music was just a hobby at first. I never saw myself being on stage and rocking out shows. After I got out of jail, I started to take it more serious, and that’s when my dream came true,” Quan said.
Quan released his debut album “Rich as in Spirit” in March 2018 on Motown Records.
Soon after news of his passing had surfaced, industry peers and friends of Quan paid tribute to the Atlanta native publicly through social media.
Fellow Georgia native and R&B singer Jacquees tweeted, “Rest in Peace my brother Rich Homie Quan. I love you for life. #Richgang’ at 2:15 PM via X (formerly Twitter). He then posted a picture of the two at a party, captioning the photo with “Legend.”
Lousiana Rapper Boosie Badazz also took to X to share his respect for Quan. “Never go forget yo smile n the way [you] talked n of course yo music” and “WE GOT SOME GOOD A—MEMORIES TOGETHER N THAT GO ALWAYS BRING A SMILE TO MY FACE.”
“May God be with US,” Migos rapper and Georgia native Quavo said on Instagram, “never saw this being [a part] of our journey.”
Rich Homie Quan was laid to rest on Tuesday, September 17, in Fulton, Georgia. The celebration of life in his honor was open to family, friends and fans. The event was also streamed live on his website.
On Monday, a post-humous track called “Song Cry” was released, where the father of five gets vulnerable and raps about masking his emotions and finding a safe place in his music. The song was released with an accompanying music video that was partially shot before his untimely death, mixed with scenes of him partying, in the studio and moments from his funeral.
