Students fill the quad, showcasing their most stylish outfits, while social media feeds overflow with pictures and outfit checks, capturing the excitement and creativity of the day.

According to the latest survey by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics, back-to-college spending is projected to hit a staggering $86.6 billion this year, marking the second-highest figure ever recorded. This surge highlights the crucial role of fashion and personal expression as students gear up for the academic year. Families are investing in the latest trends and must-have items, driven by the universal desire to make a striking first impression.

Trending Styles on Campus

Students at FAMU have fully embraced this trend, stocking up on essential back-to-school items throughout the summer. From trendy sneakers like Asics and classic Sambas to athletic wear from Lululemon, the campus is full of fashionable looks. Additionally, silk hair bows have become a go-to accessory, adding that perfect finishing touch to outfits. These items not only reflect individual style but also capture the hottest TikTok trends that dominate social media feeds.

Freshman Debuts

For the Class of 2028, their first day at FAMU marked their debut in the university’s vibrant fashion scene. Isabella Lewis, a freshman psychology major from Kentucky, shares her experience diving into this dynamic world.

“For my first day, I went with a sleek, minimalist look, inspired by the calm yet stylish outfits of the upperclassmen I’d seen. I aimed to channel that vibe in my outfit,” Lewis said. “I’m eager to see how FAMU will influence and transform my style throughout my time here.”

For many students like Lewis, the first day signifies the beginning of an exciting journey where personal style blends with campus culture, creating an experience that extends far beyond the classroom.

Continuing The Legacy of HBCU Culture

Fashion is often a huge part of the culture at HBCUs, and at FAMU, it plays a significant role in shaping the community. Cole Bigelow, a sophomore business administration major from Atlanta, Georgia, shares his perspective on how it affects FAMUs culture.

“As an HBCU, FAMU has historically been a place for Black people to express themselves, and that expression is often through in fashion,” Bigelow said. “Fashion and culture come together here creating a unique identity that defines FAMU.”

For Bigelow, FAMU’s fashion-forward environment is a vibrant reflection of its rich HBCU roots. It has long provided Black students with a space to express themselves authentically, both then and now, fostering an atmosphere that encourages individuality and creativity.

Behind The Lens: Capturing FAMU’s Style

Campus photographers offer a unique lens on the FAMU fashion scene, capturing the creative outfits that define the first day. Usher Williams, a second-year graphic design major from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, reveals his strategy for selecting the perfect photo locations.

“I am very intentional about where I take my pictures. I pick locations that match with student outfits and are recognizable,” Williams said. “Landmarks like the Eternal Flame and CASS Building snake are not only visually appealing but also symbolic of the student experience at FAMU.”

As FAMU stands at the forefront of style and self-expression, each new semester brings fresh opportunities for students to showcase their unique identities and carry on the university’s rich fashion legacy. This dynamic environment propels FAMU’s fashion scene into exciting new realms, where creativity and culture collide in vibrant ways.
